Turbines for Weavers Mountain are on the Move

Turbine deliveries are underway, starting this week, on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 104)

06/2026 - Back to overview

Sixteen (16) wind turbines will be transported from the Strait of Canso to the Weavers Mountain Road area in Pictou County as part of the Weavers Mountain Wind Energy Project. The project was developed by Glooscap First Nation and Halifax-based renewable energy developer, SWEB Development. Once operational by the end of this year, the wind farm will produce clean electricity for up to 33,000 homes in Nova Scotia.

The 192 wind turbine components arrived by ship at the Strait of Canso Superport in Mulgrave with deliveries completed as of late last week. Over the next eight weeks, they will be transported from a laydown area in Aulds Cove (near the Canso Causeway), following Highway 104 westwards all the way to the border of Antigonish and Pictou Counties. The heavy loads will exit the highway slightly west of the James River ramp on a newly constructed connection route and will be brought to the site via Beaver Mountain Road. Due to the sheer size of the components – the blades are over 80m long – a dedicated exit for the heavy loads was built by the crews of local contractor Dexter Construction.

Over the last months engineers, logistics specialists and traffic experts from the Province of Nova Scotia and the turbine supplier Nordex have worked diligently to ensure a safe and efficient move. A traffic management plan is in place, and traffic will be stopped at times and slowed down accordingly. To keep everyone safe, all drivers along the route are asked to follow the traffic signage and to drive extra cautiously when encountering the heavy loads.
